News outlets continue reporting that King Juan Carlos will, at some point, divorce Queen Sofia. New reports say he’s preparing to marry his mistress. But El Mundo says the rumors are untrue and that both former sovereigns have a cordial relationship.
King Felipe, Queen Letizia, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia offered the family of Banco Santander SA Chairman Emilio Botín their condolences after his death this week.
Don Felipe told reporters that Botín made Santander into “a global bank,” and called him a “great man” who has “done much for Spain.”
The King made his comments during a Supreme Court ceremony to open the 2014-2015 judicial year.
The judicial agenda continues to include the possible trial of the King’s sister Infanta Cristina stemming from an ongoing corruption case against her husband. Both have denied wrongdoing.
The issue stems from his leadership of a non-profit company that obtained contracts with local governments. Judges specializing in corruption, El País reported, will review her potential involvement.
King Felipe has been holding meetings at Zarzuela Palace with a number of government officials or global leaders.
Outlets say the Royal Household is working extra at dealing with a series of potential setbacks, including ongoing corruption allegations against Infanta Cristina and her husband.
Rumors of separation
Rumors have also been circulating that King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia will announce a formal separation in the near future.
While only rumors, they come from Spanish journalist Pilar Eyre, who has written about the royals, and more recently an Italian newspaper.
However, it’s difficult to know what to believe. Another report said King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, while not seen in public together for months, had regular lunches.
Catalan newspaper editor Javier Godó, Count of Godó and Spanish Grandee, is said to have warned Their Majesties against soiling the institution with divorce or formal separation.
It is said that King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia live largely separate lives. He is said to have cheated on her numerous times.
If a separation does happen, there may be a change in living arrangements for Queen Sofia, who may opt for living in Mallorca.
Divorce, while unlikely, could create much more complicated issues dealing with the Queen Mother’s role and legal status.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia are continuing efforts to make the Spanish Crown more inclusive.
This year’s reception at Almudaina Palace in Palma de Mallorca, a summer tradition, included several hundred guests from across the political and social spectrum.
On of King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s first acts was to convene representatives from civil society, including representatives of the gay and lesbian advocacy community. They did something similar last week in Palma.
King Felipe also last week hosted his first meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at Marivent Palace in Mallorca.
Then on Saturday His Majesty handed out awards at the 33rd annual King’s Cup regatta.
Observers are wondering whether King Felipe and Queen Letizia will continue vacationing in the Balearic Islands and follow through with the associated traditions.
This year they stuck to the script wanting to boost the Monarchy’s standing rather than anger people who have gotten used to seeing the Royal Family on the island every year.
Meanwhile, King Felipe this week met with Balearic Islands officials at Almudaina Palace in Palma de Mallorca. Don Felipe and Queen Letizia are vacationing at the nearby Marivent Palace.
King Felipe is implementing a variety of reforms within the Spanish Royal Household to promote transparency and prevent corruption, according to media reports.
His Majesty is prohibiting members of the Royal Family from working in the private sector. His sisters, members of the Royal Family before his proclamation, have both had jobs.
The King is also adding new controls for gifts, sending the Royal Household accounts to independent auditors and adding legal advisers.
King Juan Carlos, King Felipe’s father, is known to have accepted lavish gifts from other monarchs.
Reforms stem from a corruption investigation involving Infanta Cristina and her husband. She has denied wrongdoing.
Instead Infanta Elana and Infanta Cristina are no longer members of the Royal Family. King Felipe’s rise effectively bumped them out. They are now considered members of the King’s Family.
Members of the Royal Family are now King Felipe, Queen Letizia, King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Infanta Leonor and Infanta Sofia.
King Felipe’s remarks touted Spain’s close relationship with France, both being among the oldest countries in Europe.
“The European Union,” said the King, “is a geopolitical and economic imperative for our countries. This Europe we are building affirms itself on universal principles and values and shared affinities.”
Don Felipe also said, “The success of Europe depends on introducing national priorities into the European agenda.”
King Felipe and Queen Letizia also met with other French officials, including new Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who was born in Barcelona.
The stop by Their Majesties to the nearby Kingdom was the second international trip since they rose to power. The first was to see the Pope in Vatican City.
King Mohammed presents King Felipe and Queen Letizia with the Collar of Wissam Al Mohammadi.
King Felipe’s father, King Juan Carlos, worked for decades to maintain good relations with Morocco.
The two countries have numerous issues in common, including the former Spanish colony and now disputed Western Sahara territory, plus two remaining Spanish enclaves in Africa.
Both countries often cooperate on issues of terrorism and immigration.

Separately, the Royal Household confirmed to Spanish media outlets that King Felipe and Queen Letizia will follow royal tradition and vacation in Palma de Mallorca for at least a few days this summer.
Queen Sofia is a big fan of staying in Palma and Marivent Palace, but Queen Letizia is less keen on spending her vacation in the public eye.
