Royals Become More Inclusive

King Felipe and Queen Letizia are continuing efforts to make the Spanish Crown more inclusive.

This year’s reception at Almudaina Palace in Palma de Mallorca, a summer tradition, included several hundred guests from across the political and social spectrum.

On of King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s first acts was to convene representatives from civil society, including representatives of the gay and lesbian advocacy community. They did something similar last week in Palma.

King Felipe also last week hosted his first meeting with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy at Marivent Palace in Mallorca.

Then on Saturday His Majesty handed out awards at the 33rd annual King’s Cup regatta.

Observers are wondering whether King Felipe and Queen Letizia will continue vacationing in the Balearic Islands and follow through with the associated traditions.

This year they stuck to the script wanting to boost the Monarchy’s standing rather than anger people who have gotten used to seeing the Royal Family on the island every year.

King Juan Carlos Reappears

King Juan Carlos reappeared this week during a planned visit to Columbia, as Spain’s representative to President Juan Manuel Santos’ swearing-in.

King Juan Carlos has been out of sight for weeks, since his son become King and Spain’s Head of State.

During his visit to Colombia, Don Juan Carlos met with local officials and business leaders.

He also highlighted Columbia and Spain’s historical ties, and the new King’s efforts to boost those ties.

Meanwhile, King Felipe this week met with Balearic Islands officials at Almudaina Palace in Palma de Mallorca. Don Felipe and Queen Letizia are vacationing at the nearby Marivent Palace.

Their Majesties are scheduled to hold a reception with Balearic Islands officials and civil society representatives.

King Felipe Visits Belgium, Now In Mallorca

King Felipe was in Belguim this week for events commemorating the anniversary of the beginning of World War I.

Several media outlets noted the absence of Queen Letizia. But the Royal Household said she was never scheduled to attend, according to reports.

The couple is scheduled for make more trips around Europe and the world as part of an effort to introduce themselves as Spain’s new monarchs.

For now, Their Majesties are on vacation at Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands.

Queen Sofia was the first to arrive in Mallorca, according to media reports.
