Queen Sofia tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from a trip to Florida, according to Spanish media outlets.

Her Majesty, King Felipe’s mother, was said to be present when her husband, King Felipe, visited Zarzuela Palace yesterday, but she was masked and kept a distance.

Queen Sofia returned to Spain to see her husband after a trip to Miami tied to the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute.

King Felipe also tested positive for COVID-19 this year. King Juan Carlos is said to have gotten the disease last year while in the United Arab Emirates, according to El Mundo.

King Felipe will receive his father, King Juan Carlos, at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid Monday.

King Juan Carlos returned to Spain for a brief visit from his exile in the United Arab Emirates. The trip has caused controversy and concern at the highest levels.

The former monarch left Spain amid domestic and international probes into his financial dealings. But with some investigations dropped and Don Juan Carlos’ efforts to make good with tax authorities, he decided it was time to visit Spain.

The Spanish government agreed with King Juan Carlos visiting King Felipe at Zarzuela Palace but would not allow the former head-of-state to sleep there.

King Juan Carlos has been spending his time with friends and family along the Galician coast.

The Royal Household has stressed the trip is private in nature, but left-leaning politicians have questioned how well the king was received by influential personalities in politics and business.

King Felipe, along with other world leaders, flew to the United Arab Emirates over the weekend after the death of President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

King Felipe’s visit was also notable because his father, King Juan Carlos, moved to the UAE after a rash of corruption allegations.

Media outlets reported that King Felipe spoke by telephone with his father and the two agreed to meet in the near future.

Speculation has surrounded King Juan Carlos’ return to Spain as the former head-of-state faces no charges and has worked to make good with tax authorities.

Don Juan Carlos cannot stay at the Zarzuela Palace complex where he used to live and where his wife, Queen Sofia, still lives.

King Felipe made a quick visit to Costa Rica earlier this month to attend the inauguration of President Rodrigo Chaves Robles.

The King met with the incoming and outgoing presidents and hosted a reception with Spaniards living and working in Costa Rica.

King Felipe was also in Portugal for a meeting of the COTEC Foundation for innovation with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Italian president Sergio Mattarella.

His Majesty held a meeting with Argentine President Alberto Fernández at Zarzuela Palace last week during his European tour.

On Tuesday, King Felipe and Queen Letizia will welcome the emir of Qatar for a state visit.
