Royals Start Landmark Visit To North African Cities

King Felipe and Queen Letizia are finally in Ceuta.

Their Majesties’ trip to the North African autonomous communities of Ceuta and Melilla are the first royal visit to Spain’s North African enclaves in decades.

Delicate relations with Morocco — which claims the cities as its own — have prevented more regular trips, but the migrant crisis that has roiled Spanish politics made this week’s visit an imperative.

Their Majesties will stay two days in North Africa. The last visit by a Spanish monarch to the cities was in 2007, when King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia went.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is not accompanying the King and Queen. Critics have questioned his response to the migrant crisis.
