The Spanish Supreme Court has tabled a paternity suit against King Juan Carlos, King Felipe’s father.

At issue was a long standing claim by Belgian citizen Ingrid Sartiau, who claims to be Don Juan Carlos’ daughter.

King Juan Carlos was constitutionally inviolable during his reign. But his abdication last year opened the door to the suits.

The Supreme Court quickly rejected a claim by a Spanish citizen, but agreed to consider one by Sartiau, who.was born in 1966, abut four years after Don Juan Carlos married Queen Sofia.

King Felipe has presided over several high-profile events in Catalonia in recent days, amid ongoing separatist rumblings there.

His Majesty helped launch the large GSMA Mobile World Congress 2015 with a dinner at Pedralbes Palace, once an official residence for the Spanish Royal Family.

He then toured the exhibits at the Fira De Barcelona venue along with national and regional leaders.

The King coincided with Catalonian President Artur Mas, who recently scheduled elections for later this year as a referendum on independence.

Separately this week, King Felipe welcomed Renault-Nissan Alliance CEO Carlos Ghosn at Albéniz also in Barcelona.

In Madrid this week, part of a busy few days for the Royal Family, King Felipe and Queen Letizia welcomed Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

As is customary, Their Majesties welcomed the President and his wife during an official ceremony at El Pardo Palace, then a meeting at Zarzuela Palace and then a gathering at the Madrid Royal Palace.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, King Felipe’s parents, are back on the Royal Household’s agenda.

The two are spending less time in the public eye since Don Juan Carlos’ abdication, often seen dining our or with friends.

But they’ve made a number of official appearances in recent days.

King Juan Carlos traveled to Uruguay this week for the inauguration of President Tabaré Vázquez.

King Felipe, as Prince of Asturias, used to be the official representative of the Spanish Royal Family at Latin American inaugurations.

The task has fallen on King Juan Carlos, whose connections in Latin America run deep.

This week he also met with outgoing Uruguay President Pepe Mujica, known for living in a humble home outside the capital.

King Juan Carlos moves on to several events in Washington, D.C.

Separately, this evening Queen Sofia handed out awards in her name for painting and sculpture.

Queen Sofia has also recently attended a number of charitable events.

Spanish newspaper El Pais is praising King Felipe’s new budget cuts to Royal Household spending, including his own salary.

The new King has moved to further professionalize the Crown, implementing new codes of conduct, including a ban on certain gifts.

Don Felipe has also moved to cut travel and protocol expenses, and boost technology.

King Juan Carlos had already started reforms and cuts, further making the Spanish Royal Household among the cheapest head of state operations in Europe.

King Juan Carlos I, Spain’s former head of state, responded in recent days to a paternity lawsuit against him, according to media outlets.

Spain’s Supreme Court recently agreed to consider one of two long-standing paternity cases against Don Juan Carlos.

Now the King’s attorneys are questioning the facts surrounding Ingrid Sartiau’s claims. The Belgian citizen says King Juan Carlos is her father.

The Spanish courts had long declined to hear Sartiau’s claims because, under the Constitution, the King was inviolable.

But Don Juan Carlos’ abdication in favor of his son, now King Felipe VI, means he is no longer immune from litigation.

However, all claims against him go straight to the Supreme Court. And he is using private attorneys as opposed to those under Royal Household payroll.

King Juan Carlos appears to be enjoying his semi-retirement. Photographers often catch him enjoying favorite meals around Spain.

King Felipe arrived today in Ethiopia to participate in the ongoing African Union Summit, in an effort to strengthen Spain’s relationship with the continent.

Don Felipe met with African leaders, including Egyptian President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi and Tunisian leader Béji Caïd Essebsi.

Spain not only has former colonies in Africa, but also tries to keep strong relations with countries like Morocco and Tunisia.

King Felipe this week presided over Spain’s official remembrance of the holocaust at the Palace of the Senate in Madrid.

Don Felipe met with Spain’s Jewish and Roma leaders, on a day that is also an opportunity to stress the prevention of other crimes against humanity.

King Felipe highlighted the plight of all discriminated people’s and reminded the audience that no societty is fully protected against such nonsense.

The official agenda for the King and Queen has picked up in recent days following the Christmas and Epiphany holidays.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia also walked through the annual tourism fair in Madrid.

The tourism fair is a big deal for Spain, one of the world’s top destinations. The event brings more than 9,000 businesses and 200,000 visitors from all over the planet, according to the Royal Household.

King Felipe over the weekend rushed to Saudi Arabia, along with other global leaders, after the death of King Abdullah.

Don Felipe met with members of the Saudi Royal family, including new King Salman.

King Juan Carlos, King Felipe’s dad, worked to develop a close relationship with royals in Saudi Arabia and around the Arab World.
