Members of the Spanish Royal Family are back to work after last month’s break.

King Felipe today presided over the opening of the judicial year at Madrid’s Palace of Justice.

The ceremony came as Spanish leaders expect the Supreme Court issue its ruling following the trial of Catalan separatists.

Last week King Felipe welcomed new ambassador’s at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

Queen Letizia is also back on the agenda, including with an event last week on disabilities.

Still up in the air is the opening of parliament. There may, instead, be new elections.

King Juan Carlos had planned open heart surgery last weekend and since then members of the Spanish Royal Family have been making their way to the hospital.

Among the visitors have been King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Queen Sofia and other relatives.

One video showed Queen Sofia coming out with her sister, Princes Irene of Greece, and intimate friend, Princess Tatiana Radziwill.

King Juan Carlos’ granddaughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, are said to have given their grandfather a special and intimate gift.

Infanta Elena, King Felipe’s elder sister and her son, also named Felipe, were at the Quirón Hospital in Madrid in recent days.

Don Juan Carlos is said to be recovering well from the triple bypass. He has undergone numerous surgeries over the years, mainly for his hip.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met with King Felipe at Marivent Palace in Mallorca today.

The premier has regular meetings with the King, including during the Royal Family’s public vacation in the Mediterranean island.

The King and prime minister likely discussed the ongoing political impasse keeping Spain’s main parties from forming a government.

Separately, King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Queen Sofia also held a reception for Balearic Islands officials at Almudaina Palace.

Other than the meeting and reception, members of the Spanish Royal Family generally don’t hold public events during August.

King Felipe told media outlets he hopes political parties can form a government and the country can avoid new elections.

His Majesty made the comments to media outlets following his public vacation in the Balearic Island of Mallorca.

Over the weekend, the King presided over the awards ceremony of the King’s Cup regatta.

The King also met with local officials, including Balearic Islands President Francina Armengol.

Members of the Spanish Royal Family stay at the Marivent Palace in Mallorca but hold public audiences at the Almudaina Palace.

King Felipe traveled to Tunisia briefly late last month to mourn the death of President Beji Caid Essebsi.

His Majesty met with local leaders and heads of state from around the region for the ceremonies.

Spain works to keep close ties with North African countries near its territory, including Tunisia and Morocco.

King Juan Carlos, who has retired from public life, reappeared this weekend at the Rafa Nadal Academy in the Balearic Island of Mallorca.

King Felipe’s mother and father are fans of the tennis star and are only occasionally seen together.

Queen Sofia retains her agenda for the Royal Household, which did not release a formal announcement of this visit.

King Felipe will not hold a new round of meetings with political leaders following the Socialists failure — so far — to form a new government.

Don Felipe met last week with Congress President Meritxell Batet at his office in Zarzuela Palace to get an update.

The King tasked the Socialists, the winners of the last general elations, with forming a government. If they are unable to do so, new elections may be called.

Spain’s Constitutional Court last week scrapped a resolution against King Felipe from Catalan parliamentarians.

Last year pro-independence and republican parties joined in calling the monarchy outdated.

The Constitutional Court said such a resolution was outside the jurisdiction of the Catalan Parliament under the Spanish Constitution and the Statute of Autonomy.

King Felipe traveled to Panama at the end of June to attend the new president’s inauguration and celebrate Panama City’s 500th anniversary.

Panamanian officials unveiled a monument in Old Panama City in honor of His Majesty’s visit.

The King met with the country’s outgoing leader, Juan Carlos Varela, and the new president, Laurentino Cortizo.

As prince, King Felipe used to visit Latin America often, a role that then fell on his father. But King Juan Carlos recently announced his retirement from public life.

King Felipe held a series of audiences at Albéniz Palace in Barcelona late last month in an effort to make his presence felt in Catalonia.

His Majesty met with attorneys from the Catalan city of Tarragona, which is down the Mediterranean coast from Barcelona.

The King met with leaders of the non-profit Barcelona Global, which works to promote the city internationally.

A third meeting was with Josep Sánchez Llibre, head of the Foment del Treball Nacional, a union of Catalan employers.

The Spanish Royal Household is looking to rebut claims from Catalan nationalists and pro-independence politicians that King Felipe doesn’t have much support in the region.

Albéniz Palace is owned by the Barcelona government but is considered the Royal Family’s official residence there.

His Majesty also attended an awards ceremony focused on logistics during his visit.
