Royals Back To Work

Members of the Spanish Royal Family are back to work after last month’s break.

King Felipe today presided over the opening of the judicial year at Madrid’s Palace of Justice.

The ceremony came as Spanish leaders expect the Supreme Court issue its ruling following the trial of Catalan separatists.

King Juan Carlos Has Heart Surgery

King Juan Carlos had planned open heart surgery last weekend and since then members of the Spanish Royal Family have been making their way to the hospital.

Among the visitors have been King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Queen Sofia and other relatives.

One video showed Queen Sofia coming out with her sister, Princes Irene of Greece, and intimate friend, Princess Tatiana Radziwill.

King Juan Carlos’ granddaughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, are said to have given their grandfather a special and intimate gift.

Infanta Elena, King Felipe’s elder sister and her son, also named Felipe, were at the Quirón Hospital in Madrid in recent days.

Don Juan Carlos is said to be recovering well from the triple bypass. He has undergone numerous surgeries over the years, mainly for his hip.

UPDATED: King Meets Prime Minister, Mallorca Leaders

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met with King Felipe at Marivent Palace in Mallorca today.

The premier has regular meetings with the King, including during the Royal Family’s public vacation in the Mediterranean island.

The King and prime minister likely discussed the ongoing political impasse keeping Spain’s main parties from forming a government.

Separately, King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Queen Sofia also held a reception for Balearic Islands officials at Almudaina Palace.

King Hopes To Avoid New Elections As Royals Vacation In Mallorca

King Felipe told media outlets he hopes political parties can form a government and the country can avoid new elections.

His Majesty made the comments to media outlets following his public vacation in the Balearic Island of Mallorca.

Over the weekend, the King presided over the awards ceremony of the King’s Cup regatta.

King Felipe will not hold a new round of meetings with political leaders following the Socialists failure — so far — to form a new government.

Court Scraps Resolution Against King

Spain’s Constitutional Court last week scrapped a resolution against King Felipe from Catalan parliamentarians.

Last year pro-independence and republican parties joined in calling the monarchy outdated.

The Constitutional Court said such a resolution was outside the jurisdiction of the Catalan Parliament under the Spanish Constitution and the Statute of Autonomy.

King Travels To Panama

King Felipe traveled to Panama at the end of June to attend the new president’s inauguration and celebrate Panama City’s 500th anniversary.
